Balthasar van der Ast
Basket of Fruits
Part of the Art Through Time Collection, Basket of Fruits is a quintessential example of Dutch Golden Age still life by Balthasar van der Ast, created around 1622. This meticulously painted composition centres on a wicker basket overflowing with a rich variety of fruit — grapes, plums, apples, cherries and more — flanked by elegantly placed blue-and-white porcelain plates. Van der Ast was celebrated for his ability to harmonise texture, colour and form, using soft light and precise detail to elevate ordinary produce into a subtle celebration of earthly abundance. Popular interpretations see the work as both a celebration of nature’s bounty and a meditation on the transience of life, typical of seventeenth-century still lifes that balance beauty with underlying symbolic depth.
