Calanque des Antibois
Part of the Art Through Time Collection, Calanque des Antibois is a luminous coastal landscape by French Neo-Impressionist painter Henri-Edmond Cross, completed between 1891 and 1892. The painting portrays a rugged Mediterranean shoreline near Antibes on the French Riviera, where rocky promontories bathed in warm oranges and purples meet the calm, light blue waters dotted with small boats and set against distant hills. Cross’s technique applies thousands of tiny, vibrant brushstrokes — influenced by Pointillism — to capture the shimmering interplay of colour and light across land and sea. This work is celebrated for its harmonious palette and rhythmic surface, embodying Cross’s belief in colour as the central expressive force in landscape painting and reflecting the radiant clarity of the southern French coast.
